1. Best Overall Foam Mattress
Zinus Ultima Comfort

There are many reasons behind our choice, and each of them can bring many benefits to your sleep quality.
First of all, the 10-inch Zinus Ultima Comfort foam mattress provides great support for your body. The top memory foam layer conforms to the shape of your body, so no matter which way you sleep, it ensures great comfort. The mattress is divided into three layers (from bottom to top):
- 5-inch high-density support foam
- 2-inch comfort foam
- 3-inch memory foam
All of these layers work together to ensure that you have all the comfort you need for a sound sleep. The cover is made out of soft-knitted jacquard fabric, which adds more to the comfort as well as the coziness of this mattress.
As is the norm these days, Zinus uses CertiPUR-US certified foam, which ensures that the foam doesn’t contain VOC’s, PBDE flame retardants, lead, mercury, and other harmful chemicals. Also, the memory foam uses Zinus’ BioFoam technology, which ensures freshness thanks to the use of natural plant oil instead of petroleum oil.
There are only two minor downsides to this mattress that we can point out. The first one is the smell. Some users have complained about the odor being a bit too strong, but it disappears over time.
Also, for a mattress that is labeled as ultra-soft, it’s a bit firmer than your typical memory foam mattress. Of course, this will be an advantage to some, but you’re not going to totally sink into this memory foam mattress, if that’s what you’re expecting.
- High quality
- Comfortable multi-layer foam construction
- Great value for money
- Unpleasant odor at first
- A bit firm for a memory foam mattress
2. Best High-End Foam Mattress
Best Price Memory Foam Mattress

Don’t be fooled by the brand’s name, as this mattress isn’t cheap. If you care about your sleep to the extent of not caring how much money you’re going to spend on a mattress, this could be a great choice. It covers pretty much every aspect of ensuring high sleep quality, if you’re willing to swing for it.
Pretty much everything about this mattress is luxurious. Three layers of high-quality foam can make you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud.
The top layer is 2” memory foam. Underneath it is a 2” Super Soft Foam layer that features a pressure relief system, a perfect transition from the body-forming memory foam to the 4” high-density foam base.
If we had to name the downsides, the most obvious one for many people would be the price. Even though this mattress has a lot to offer, it might be out of the budget of those who aren’t looking for a premium option.
Look on the bright side, the price is nowhere near the stratosphere of Tempur-Pedic foam mattresses.
- Premium build
- Outstanding comfort
- 10-year warranty
3. Best Budget Foam Mattress
Linenspa 8-inch Hybrid Mattress
Reviewed by: Max Perzon
This mattress is the proof that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to make sure you have a restful and comfortable sleep. Considering everything that it offers, it’s safe to say that this mattress is more than affordable.
The first thing that makes this mattress great is a combination of memory foam and innerspring. The mattress isn’t too firm, but it’s not that soft either, so it’s pretty well-balanced.
The 1.5” memory foam top layer is enough to ensure great motion isolation, without being too soft. Of course, this is pretty subjective, so there are people that will still find it a bit too firm, mainly due to the innerspring. The mattress cover is a mixture of polyester and rayon material, which provides softness and breathability.
Although the quality of the materials is excellent for the price, the durability of this mattress is unproven. The good news is, the manufacturer offers a 10-year warranty, so this might not be that big of an issue.
- Comfortable cover
- 10-year warranty
- Might be a bit too firm to some
4. Best Versatile Mattress
Olee Sleep Tri-Folding Memory Foam Mattress
Reviewed by: Max Perzon
If you’re not looking for the main mattress for your bedroom, but rather for one that can ensure comfort wherever you are, this can be a great choice. The Olee Sleep tri-folding mattress offers a great combination of comfort and convenience.
The thing we like the most about this mattress is its versatility. You can use it for camping, sleepovers, and all kinds of activities that require a mobile mattress. Any kind of temporary sleeping accommodation can be made better with this small mattress. It is about 2/3rd the width of a twin bed.
Of course, it’s also super comfortable, thanks to 1.5” of hypoallergenic memory foam on top of a 2.5” HD foam base. It might not be the best out there, but definitely good enough as a temporary solution. Even if you have to spend many nights sleeping on this mattress, it can deliver comfort and sound sleep.
Since this is an affordable solution, a thing that you can’t really expect from it is many years of service. It tends to become saggy with time, but there’s a high chance that you’ll get your money’s worth. Another issue is the size. It only comes in one size, which might not suit everyone well.
- Highly affordable
- Portable tri-folding design
- Comfortable memory foam top layer
- Durability not that high
- Available in size of 25” x 75” only
5. Best Gel Memory Foam Mattress
Dreamfoam Bedding Arctic Dreams
Reviewed by: Max Perzon
If the only thing holding you back from getting memory foam mattress is that you’ve heard so much about it being too hot, this mattress can be a perfect solution. The use of cooling gel infused memory foam solves the heat sinking problem of traditional memory foam mattresses.
The top layer is 2.5” Energex gel memory foam. The gel-infused foam helps regulate your body temperature during the night, which should ensure a very comfortable, uninterrupted sleep. The base is 7.5-inch high polyurethane foam, which is high in density to support the body-forming top layer.
Like every other mattress on our list, this one has some minor flaws too. It doesn’t have the best edge support, which is common for memory foam mattresses.
Aside from this, the manufacturer notes that there might be some initial odor issues – this is a common issue for vacuum-packed memory foam mattresses. For this reason, they recommend letting the mattress air for 24 hours before you use it.
- Great comfort
- Cooling effect
- High quality foam layers
- On the expensive side
- Not the best edge support

This buyer’s guide will help you identify all the important aspects of buying a foam mattress, so that you can find the right one for you easily.
When to Change Your Mattress
Before we get into everything there is to know about foam mattresses, you should know when to consider replacing your old mattress. A general rule is that you should change your mattress every 7-8 years.
Of course, this isn’t a strict rule, and there are a couple of factors to take into consideration. Your mattress, as well as your body, will let you know whether it’s time for a replacement. Here are some signs to look for:
- The mattress feels worn out – If you notice a dent in your mattress that your body has made, or if you feel like the mattress is getting saggy, it might be a good idea to consider a replacement. Continuing to sleep on a mattress like this can not only be uncomfortable, but also likely to damage your health.
- You’re waking up tired – Even though there are many things that can cause this, the quality of your mattress plays an important role. Sleeping on an old mattress can make you restless and cause all sorts of body aches, which result in poor sleep quality.
- There are signs of overuse – These include visible tearing, holes, or any kind of damage that can prevent you from having a good night’s sleep.
If you’re on the lookout for signs that your sleep is suffering due to an old mattress, you’ll know when to replace it. Once you make this decision, you’ll probably have to do quite a bit of research. To help you with this, we’ll offer all the information you need about getting a good foam mattress.
Types of Foam
A ‘foam mattress’ is a fairly broad term, but today most people associate foam mattresses with memory foam. While this is so, all memory foam mattresses feature multiple foam layers, with the body-forming memory foam layer on top. The one you go with will primarily depend on your need and budget. Here are the main types of foam used in mattresses:
Polyurethane is the first material that was used to make bedding foam. Since it’s not very expensive, and can ensure optimal comfort, it’s been the main choice of many people for decades. The material is usually made out of petroleum oil, or palm oil in some cases.
Not every polyurethane foam is the same. The biggest difference is in density. The higher the density, the more expensive the foam is, but we’ll discuss density in depth a bit later.
High-density polyurethane foam is used as the base layer in memory foam mattresses.
Latex foam can be synthetic or natural. Natural latex comes from the rubber tree, while synthetic includes the use of different chemicals.
Of course, natural latex is of higher quality, and is healthier than synthetic. It’s harvested from the tress that grow in controlled, or special conditions, in order to get the most out of it. The liquid latex is vulcanized in a mold, and a very dense substance is made. As you can probably guess, natural latex foam is much more expensive than synthetic latex foam, sometimes prohibitively so.
Density is the main reason why latex is better than polyurethane. It makes a mattress more resilient, and more comfortable to sleep on. Latex foam is body-forming like memory foam, but usually not as soft.
In the early 2000’s a new type of foam emerged – memory foam. Since then, it has pretty much become the standard of comfort. It’s also known as ‘viscoelastic’, as there are different chemicals used to ensure that the foam can conform to your body.
Many people decide to go with memory foam today. The drawback is that memory foam traps your body heat and can make you feel hot in your sleep, or even just lying in it.
Gel Memory Foam
Recently, memory foam got an upgrade by being infused with gel. There are many reasons why this can make a difference to some people.
Chief of all is the fact that memory foam is notorious for absorbing body heat, resulting in hot sleeping. The cooling gel serves to counteract this property. Even though it’s not cold to the touch, it does a great job of regulating body temperature and making sure that the skin can breathe.
Also, gel memory foam is considered more durable and resilient than traditional memory foam. It makes sure that the conformity and elasticity is higher, and that the mattress can last longer.
These are the most common types of foam used in mattresses. The one you choose will determine the quality of your sleep, so make sure to choose wisely. Of course, there are other factors that you need to take into account before buying a new foam mattress.
Depending on your body dimensions, number of sleepers, or your personal preference, you can choose from a number of mattress sizes. Some people need larger beds, due to new family members, or simply because they love spacious mattresses. At the same time, some people enjoy cozying up in a smaller bed.
Here are the common mattress sizes in the US:
- King – 76″ x 80″
- California King – 72″ x 84″
- Queen – 60″ x 80″
- Full XL – 53″ x 80″
- Full – 53″ x 75″
- Twin XL – 38″ x 80″
- Twin or Single – 38″ x 75″
The spaciousness of your room can dictate the size of your mattress. Residents of expensive cities where space is a premium will have different priorities than those who live in big houses in the suburb.
This is a very important aspect of making sure that your mattress is comfortable enough. In case you didn’t know this, the right firmness is mostly based on your sleeping position. To give you an idea about which mattress suits which sleeping position, here are the most common ones:
- Sleeping on the side – If you enjoy sleeping on either side of your body, you’re probably best off with a softer mattress. Since there’s not that much pressure on your spine, there’s no need for a firm mattress.
- Changing positions – A medium-soft mattress can be a good choice for those who switch positions during sleep. The mattress can conform to different positions, and offer better support.
- Sleeping on the back – This is where a medium-firm mattress can be the best choice. Not too firm to cause discomfort, but firm enough to provide support for your spine.
- Sleeping on the stomach – A firm mattress is the most suitable one for stomach sleepers, as well as people suffering from back pain or obesity.
Keep in mind that this isn’t something you should follow closely, but rather a general guide. At the end of the day, you’ll always go with the level of firmness that ensures the most comfort.
Depending on whether you’re buying a mattress for your bedroom, guest room, or because you want to try out a new one, you’ll go for a different foam mattress type. There are also times when you might need to change your usual sleep position or habits. For example, sleeping during pregnancy may be different from the usual sleep, so you could use a different mattress.
Make sure to plan ahead when buying a mattress, so that you can find the one that will fit as many uses as possible. This way, you get a versatile mattress and you don’t need to spend a lot of money on changing it frequently.
Your financial situation plays an important role in choosing a new mattress. You don’t want to spend your money on a mattress that won’t fit your needs, and that you’ll be stuck with until it’s time for the next change. At the same time, you don’t want to overpay for a mattress that has some features that you don’t find useful.
Keep in mind that, when it comes to mattresses price doesn’t always equal quality. Some of our choices are fairly affordable, yet capable of ensuring great comfort. At the same time, there are some that are a bit of an overkill to some people.
You need to take into account the size, materials, and reviews. The opinions of people that have similar sleeping habits as you can be quite helpful. Choose the features that matter the most, plan your budget, and you’ll have no issues finding the mattress that works for you.
When you invest your money in a good mattress, you’ll want to ensure that it serves you for as long as possible, which would require you to keep it in good condition for years to come.
One of the ways to do this is making sure that you protect your mattress from dust or dirt. This will not only protect the mattress, but your health as well. Use a mattress protector, or a topper. An advantage of a mattress topper is that it adds another layer of comfort, so it could be a good idea to have one.
Also, make sure to air your mattress at least once a week, or every 10 days. This will keep it fresh and bacteria from forming.
Everyone should understand the importance of a good night’s sleep. Poor sleep quality can cause weight gain, low energy levels, and a variety of health issues. This is why everyone should consider getting the best mattress that they can afford.
As you can see, there are many things to take under consideration. Foam density, firmness, and resilience are among the most important factors. You also need to choose your mattress based on your needs, as well as personal preferences.
Now that you know everything you should about finding the best foam mattress for yourself, go ahead and explore the available options. By doing this, you’ll get the chance to freshen up your bedroom and reap all the benefits of high sleep quality.
